Tony Romo discusses injury and Cowboys potentially drafting a quarterback

The Dallas Cowboys (4-11) have been an utter mess without their starting quarterback Tony Romo for most of the 2015 season.

And with the aging quarterback showing signs of wear and tear, it is obvious that the Cowboys need to address a long term solution for a backup beyond the Romo era, which could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

SpeakingĀ on KTCK-AM 1310, The Ticket, Romo discussedĀ the possibility of adding a plate to strengthenĀ his mending collarbone.

“But we’re going to have a good plan. If we have to put a plate in there, something small, we’ll do that. That should ensure that that doesn’t happen, or the percentage of that goes way, way down,” he said, viaĀ Jon Machota of Sports Day.

However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said a plate would not be necessary unless Romo has a setback.

“Unless something occurs that hasn’t occurred, he will not have a plate,” Jones said on the Shan and RJ show.Ā “He will heal naturally. It’s the way to go.”

Fortunately, Romo will have several months to heal before he will be back in action next year when the team reunites to for spring practices.

And speaking of next year and in particular the NFL Draft, Romo shared his thoughts about selecting a quarterback in 2016, per Machota.

“I think you draft whoever the best player is that’s going to help your football team. … If there is a (QB) that’s really special, then you have to take a guy who in some ways is really special. But when you go through the evaluation, you can’t reach. Wherever we’re gonna end up you’re going to have a good player, and you go to ensure that you’re going to get a great player regardless, that’s the most important thing. If that turns out to be a quarterback, if that’s the best player then we’ve got to take him.”

Due to the team’sĀ unfortunate season, the Cowboys areĀ on course to possess one of the earlier draft picks, which could certainly leave an opening to snag one of the top passers in the draft.

Whether Dallas considers a quarterback for the future or continues to gamble with an ailing Romo will be one of the more intriguing storylines to follow approaching next year’s draft.
