Former NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez, who played 17 years in the league before retiring in 2013, was pursued by multiple teams to play this year.
While that obviously didn’t happen, Gonzalez answered a few questions as to whether he would consider being “rented out” by a Super Bowl team in need of a better tight end (via NFL.com).
Gonzalez responded to the hypothetical question with this.
If I could be like the third-string tight end, and I don’t have to get in the game, and I can get a ring, yeah.
In all reality, Gonzalez, 38, seems quite content performing his current analysis job in a comfy television studio. On whether he would consider coming out of retirement to play again with any NFL team, Gonzalez had this to say.
If there was a team out there in need of a tight end, they better go somewhere else because I’m about 230 pounds now. I’m afraid I’d get crushed out there on the football field. I enjoyed 17 years, had a great time, but I’m very happy where I’m at right now.
Gonzalez declined to mention who the two teams were who actually pursued him at the beginning of 2014. With many teams lacking in efficiency at that position, making an accurate guess on the two is probably pretty tough.
Going back to Gonzalez’ semi-joking statement that he would fill in as a third string tight end so he could earn a Super Bowl ring forces all of us to imagine Gonzalez donning Seahawks’ blue and green catching perhaps just one pass from quarterback Russell Wilson.
As we reflect on Gonzalez amazing 17-year career, he has so many accomplishments to be proud of, including sitting right behind only one player, Jerry Rice, in career receptions. The one thing that Gonzalez didn’t end up with during his years with the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons was a Super Bowl ring.
