Luis Quinones tapped in a rebound for the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute, and Tigres UANL went on to beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 on Tuesday in San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico, to win a first-round series in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Tigres prevailed 4-1 in the two-match, total-goals series.
The second match was scoreless until Tigres got the breakthrough shortly after halftime. Ozziel Herrera dribbled to the end line and lifted a cross to Fernando Gorriaran, whose looping header hit the crossbar. In the ensuing goal line scrabble, Quinones pounded home a right-footed shot.
Tigres sealed the victory with goals from Herrera in the 85th minute and from Juan Vigon in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.
Next up for Tigres in the CONCACAF Champions Cup will be a round of 16 match against either Orlando City or Cavalry Football Club, a team from suburban Calgary.
