Ted Thompson will no longer be Packers’ general manager

In what qualifies as potentially the most-shocking news of the young 2018 calendar year, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that long-time Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson will transition into a new role here soon. The team’s search for a new GM will begin immediately.

“Long-time general manager Ted Thompson is expected to transition into a new role within the organization and Green Bay will soon begin a search for a new GM,” Rapoport reported Monday evening.

Thompson has been the Packers’ general manager since returning to the club back in 2005. Prior to that, he served five seasons as the Seahawks’ VP of Player Personnel and spent eight seasons as an executive in Green Bay.

The Packers are coming off a down 2017 season that saw them finish with a 7-9 record. In large part due to Thompson’s checkered draft history, the team simply has not built up enough talent around former MVP Aaron Rodgers under center. That likely plays a role in this shocking news.
