TCU made No. 7 Virginia the first team eliminated from the Men’s College World Series with a 4-3 victory on Sunday in Omaha, Neb.
The Horned Frogs (43-23), who rebounded from a loss to Oral Roberts on Friday, will play on Tuesday against the loser of Sunday night’s game between the Golden Eagles and Florida.
TCU took a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning when Anthony Silva reached on an infield single, moved to second on Luke Boyers’ sacrifice bunt and scored on Austin Davis’ double to deep center.
The Cavaliers (50-15) responded in the bottom of the inning as Harrison Didawick led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on Griff O’Ferrall’s flyout and scored when Ethan O’Donnell grounded out to shortstop to pull Virginia within 4-3.
Left-hander Ben Abeldt, who had allowed the RBI groundout before getting out of the eighth, returned in the ninth. Casey Saucke singled with two outs and got to second on an error, but Abeldt notched his second strikeout of the inning to put the game away and earn his second save.
Elijah Nunez, Karson Bowen, Silva and Davis had two hits apiece for TCU, while Cole Fontenelle drove in two runs. The Horned Frogs outhit Virginia 12-5.
Ethan Anderson homered for the Cavaliers, but no Virginia batter had more than one hit. The Cavaliers struck out a total of nine times.
