It was recently reported that the Indianapolis Colts want to iron out a new contract with the team’s No. 1 wide receiver, T.Y. Hilton, sometime in the near future.
Hilton, who is entering into the final year of his rookie contract, had a carefree response when asked about a new deal:
“If they want to pay me, they’ll pay me,” Hilton said, according to The Indianapolis Star. “It takes both sides to come to an agreement. I leave that up to my agent and just go out there and have fun.”
Hilton is on track to earn $665,000 in 2015, which makes him a steal as far as successful wide receives go in the league. He was the top receiver for the team last year, tallying 82 receptions for 1,345 yards and seven touchdowns. The former third-round pick will be joined by veteran wide receive Andre Johnson and rookie Phillip Dorsett to form a talented wide receiver group.
If a new deal isn’t agreed to by March, he will be up for a massive raise on the free agent market next year. This would have the Colts not only preparing to pay top dollar to retain Hilton, but also working towards a massive deal to keep star quarterback Andrew Luck.
Whenever contract talks with Hilton get serious, the Colts are going to have to be prepared to throw some big money his way. The easy-going attitude he shares now might toughen up a bit next spring when he has a plethora of potential suitors.
