New England Patriots’ running back Shane Vereen set the record straight himself directly via Twitter in regards to rumors that he is seeking a $5 million annual contract.

Vereen is slated to become a free agent next month and will likely draw serious interest on the open market. It’s important that the former second-round pick set the record straight here. He’s not going to get $5 million per season in this climate for running backs. That’s simply not happening.
With that said, Vereen has more negotiating power than other running backs on the free-agent market. He has recorded nearly 100 receptions over the past two seasons—a key component to success for running backs in today’s NFL.
With the Patriots’ deep pool of running backs consisting of LeGarrette Blount, Jonas Gray and impending free agent Stevan Ridley, it will be interesting to see which direction they choose to go in 2015.
As it relates to Vereen, there should be a near unlimited amount of teams prepared to offer him a decent contract. The CAL product is averaging about four receptions per game over the past two seasons. That’s a mighty fine draw for running back-needy teams.
