Scott Boras blasts Derek Jeter, Marlins’ new ownership group

Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter

Super agent Scott Boras is always a prominent part of the MLB offseason. With Boras already blasting the new Miami Marlins ownership, the 2017-18 offseason looks to be no different.

With a potential fire sale looming in Miami, Boras made it known that he is not happy with the Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter led ownership group.

“That has nothing to do with the fans,” Boras said, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. “It has nothing to do with winning. It has nothing to do with anything other than a financial plan that suits ownership without consideration of the impact it has on Major League Baseball.”

The elephant in the room here is that it’s fairly easy to question Boras’ motives. As an agent of some of baseball’s best, highest-paid players, he obviously doesn’t like teams cutting payroll.

But that doesn’t mean that what he’s saying is wrong. Jeffrey Loria was a frustrating owner for many reasons. But a big one was his constant cost-cutting ways. By the time Miami fans could get to know any of the team’s good players, they were traded. Given that new ownership groups tend to represent new hope, it has to be frustrating to see one taking some of the same actions that the old one did.

With that said, it’s not as though the Marlins have been a competitive team in recent years. Miami hasn’t returned to the playoffs since winning the World Series in 2003. As good as players like Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, and Marcell Ozuna have been, the Marlins haven’t had a winning season with any of them on the Major League roster.

We certainly get what Boras is saying. But at the same time, we can’t believe that Miami’s fans will mind seeing a change from what’s been a highly ineffective strategy.
