Baseball fans are more than ready for MLB Opening Day because it’s been five months since the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series. Yet, for the other fanbases who didn’t win a trophy, fans have been waiting to see their team play competitive baseball for much longer.

While the very last roster spots are still up for grabs in spring training, MLB teams have a strong idea of where their strengths and weaknesses are. Some teams have gotten to spring training and realized they still have a need to improve their starting pitching staff and there’s reportedly a former Cy Young winner available on the trade block.

Cy Young winners don’t become available often. If they do, it’s usually at the start of the offseason, headlining MLB free agency. While most of the free agents have already signed contracts for the 2025 season, a two-time All-Star is still available on the trade block.

Specifically, Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara, who won the NL Cy Young Award in 2022. Yet, Alcantara is only signed through 2026, which means he’ll be a free agent in 2027 and the Marlins could be looking to trade him long before then.

According to MLB Network’s baseball insider Jon Morosi, he “expects” Alcantara to be traded in July. Furthermore, former MLB star Harold Reynolds expects the deal to happen “before Opening Day.”

Alcantara has pitched for the Marlins for seven seasons, compiling a very good 3.32 ERA in that timeframe. Already an ace in Miami, there are several contenders who would benefit from trading for Alcantara before the 2025 MB season gets underway.
