The San Francisco 49ers were set to take part in their first practice ahead of Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs from the site of UNLV Monday afternoon.
But as the 49ers arrived, reports indicated that they were not happy about the condition of the practice fields. Last week saw natural grass laid on top of two artificial-field surfaces. According to multiple media reports, conditions of the fields have generated safety concerns.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area notes that team officials reported back to the 49ers last week that the conditions were like a sponge.
“I can tell you after talking to various people from the 49ers they don’t seem particular pleased with the practice field,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted.
The 49ers have a couple choices here. They can continue to practice this week at UNLV or request to join the Chiefs at the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice facility in Henderson. Though, that would create logistical nightmares.
Apparently, the 49ers’ current practice fields grade out between 48-50. The standard NFL field is required to be in the 70 to 80 range.
This could end up being a competitive disadvantage for the 49ers given where Kansas City is set to hold practices during the week.
