Saints’ Sean Payton on Drew Brees: ‘He’s coming back’

Drew Brees and Sean Payton lead a Saints squad that is among the biggest boom/bust NFL teams in 2017.

Technically, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is slated to hit free agency in March. Realistically, there’s absolutely no reason to believe that he will actually become a free agent.

Saints head coach Sean Payton had in the past refused to comment on Brees’ contract situation. Some people might have read more into that than it was worth.

Payton is now making his stance clear for all of those who were concerned Brees wouldn’t return to the Saints.

That’s about as clear as an NFL head coach can be leading into free agency.

New Orleans still retains the right to place the franchise tag on the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer. But it seems that the two sides will get a contract hashed out before that comes to fruition.

Brees is coming off a 2017 campaign that saw him complete an NFL-record 72 percent of his passes to go with 4,334 yards en route to leading New Orleans to a surprise NFC South title.
