Roger Staubach predicts Cowboys success under ‘best quarterback’ Tony Romo

Legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach knows a thing or two about being a successful leader, as proven by five Super Bowl appearances and two championships in his 11-year career.

Now, 36 years removed from the field, Staubach is predicting success for quarterback Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys. He also pegged the Cowboys as a playoff team last season, which they were, ending their long four-year drought. The Cowboys, who finished the season 12-4, competed in two playoff games losing the NFC divisional matchup to the Green Bay Packers.

Staubach had nothing but high regard for Romo and the team speaking at Tuesday’s kickoff luncheon.

This year I think it is special. Last year ended in kind of a good/bad way, they had a great year, they were 12-4, played tough in the playoffs, so I’m excited. They’ve got the players. They’ve got the best quarterback, Tony (Romo) is on a tremendous roll offensively, and they’re going to have a little more depth on defense, so I’m excited about it (via Todd Archer of ESPN).”

Staubach has always stood by Romo and the two have developed a friendship over the years. Whether this will be the year the Cowboys make it the Super Bowl remains to be seen, but Staubach doesn’t want to mention those words.

“I think Tony’s right there with the top quarterbacks in the NFL,” Staubach said. “I’d take him with anybody, he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the league, so it’s just great to see the support he’s getting and last year, they really had a good football team, they were 12-4 and I think this year … I don’t want to jinx anybody, but I think they’re really going to have a good year.”

The last time the Cowboys made a Super Bowl appearance was in 1995 when they were victorious over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since Romo became the starter for the Cowboys in 2005, the Cowboys have only made the postseason four times, which includes their 2014 playoff run.

It’s about time for Romo to help lead the ‘Boys to the next level, and if they continue to playing as they did last season then they surely have a chance.
