Left-hander Andrew Chafin agreed to a return with the Arizona Diamondbacks, multiple outlets reported Saturday, joining his former club on a one-year, $5.5 million deal.
The contract includes a $7.25 million club option for 2024 with a $750,000 buyout. Up to $1 million in appearance bonuses is available in 2023.
Chafin, 32, began his major league career with the Diamondbacks in 2014 and has gone 14-20 with a 3.23 ERA in 476 appearances (three starts) over nine seasons, including stints with the Chicago Cubs (2020-21), Oakland Athletics (2021) and Detroit Tigers (2022).
With the Tigers last season, Chafin was 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA over 64 appearances and had 67 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings. In his seven seasons with Arizona, after he was drafted by the club in the first round (No. 43 overall) of the 2011 draft, he was 10-12 with a 3.68 ERA in 337 appearances.
