Braves land catcher Sean Murphy in 3-team trade

The Atlanta Braves acquired Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy in a three-team trade involving the Milwaukee Brewers, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Murphy, 28, batted .250 with a career-high 18 home runs and 66 RBIs in 148 games with the A’s in 2022.

He won a Gold Glove in 2021 and finished fourth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2020.

In 330 games over parts of four seasons with Oakland, Murphy batted .236 with 46 homers and 147 RBIs.

Per the reports, the Brewers will receive All-Star catcher William Contreras and minor league right-hander Justin Yeager from Atlanta and right-hander Joel Payamps from Oakland.

The A’s will receive catcher Manny Pina, right-hander Freddy Tarnok and left-hander Kyle Muller from the Braves and outfielder Esteury Ruiz from the Brewers.

Contreras, 24, made the National League All-Star team in 2022. He batted .278 with 20 homers and 45 RBIs in 97 games.

Pina, 35, played in five games for Atlanta in 2022 and hit .143 with two RBIs.

Ruiz, 23, batted .171 with two RBIs in 17 games with the San Diego Padres and Brewers.

Payamps, 28, was 3-6 with a 3.23 ERA in 41 relief appearances with the Kansas City Royals and Athletics.

Muller, 25, was 1-1 with an 8.03 ERA in three starts for the Braves.

Tarnok, 24, made one appearance (his MLB debut) and tossed 2/3 of an inning with one hit allowed.

Yeager, 24, was 1-0 with nine saves and a 3.10 ERA in 49 relief appearances at two levels in Atlanta’s farm system in 2022.
