New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas could miss the first month of the season as he works his way through shoulder inflammation, the New York Post reported Saturday.
Spring training doesn’t begin for another month, but Montas is behind schedule with his offseason throwing and conditioning programs, according to the report.
The 29-year-old was acquired by the Yankees from the Oakland Athletics at last season’s trade deadline. Montas struggled to a 1-3 record and a 6.35 ERA in eight starts with the Yankees and was 5-12 with a 4.05 ERA in 27 combined starts in 2022 with the A’s and Yankees.
On Friday, Montas agreed to a one-year, $7.5-million deal with the Yankees to avoid arbitration.
In seven major league seasons, Montas is 36-35 with a 3.90 ERA in 129 appearances (99 starts) for the Chicago White Sox, A’s and Yankees.
