Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu will be staying in the Windy City for the foreseeable future after accepting the team’s qualifying offer on Thursday.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Abreu accepted the $17.8 million deal for the 2020 season and will return as the team’s first baseman.
The 32-year-old slugger launched 33 home runs during the 2019 season and set a career-high in RBI (123). He also finished the season with a .284/.330/.503 slash line, 38 doubles and a .833 OPS.
Chicago is expected to be aggressive this offseason in its pursuit of impact bats and pitching. Now with Abreu’s return secured, the club could now turn its focus to adding a high-end pitcher to its rotation.
