Tony Romo has been debating an offseason surgery to have a plate inserted in his troublesome clavicle, and now Ian Rapoport says he will indeed opt for the procedure, which is designed to strengthen the bone to prevent further issues.
The surgery will reportedly take place next week.
“The titanium plate will attach to the clavicle with screws, serving as an internal cast for support. The hope is that next week’s procedure will eliminate further re-breaking of the collarbone,” Marc Sessler of NFL.com wrote.
Romo is expected to be ready for team OTAs in May, as recovery times for this procedure vary between six to eight weeks, per the report.
This is the same clavicle Romo broke in 2010 and twice this past season. Clearly, some additional support is desired, and Romo has already stated he wants to play four more years. This lines up with what Jerry Jones said recently when he told media Romo would be his quarterback for four or five more years.
With Romo behind center, the Cowboys are championship contenders. Without him, we witnessed a disastrous campaign in 2015 as the franchise tanked to 4-12.
The poor showing allowed the team to acquire the No. 4 overall pick of the upcoming draft. It seems as if the franchise is confident to make a go of things without a star rookie passer, though, because it’s been reported the Cowboys have no intention of drafting a quarterback with that pick.
