As expected, the Tennessee Titans will release running back DeMarco Murray ahead of the new league year, per the team’s website.
“I want to thank DeMarco for his contributions as a Titan, not only for what he did on the field but also in the locker room and in the community,” Titans general manager Jon Robinson said in a statement. “He was a pro in every facet and we wish him and his family the best moving forward.”
Murray turned 30 last month and has definitely seen his production drop off recently. After piling up 1,664 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2016, he didn’t eclipse 1,000 all-purpose yards last season and scored just seven touchdowns. On top of that, he suffered a knee injury late in the season and young back Derrick Henry came on strong in his absence.
The Titans will save $4.5 million against the cap making this move, so it makes too much sense not to release Murray. Henry is expected to be the lead back going forward, and he appears to have a bright future ahead of him in that capacity.
