Report: Tiger Woods to miss Open Championship at Royal Liverpool

Tiger Woods will not make the trip overseas to play in the Open Championship next month at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England, Sports Illustrated reported Friday.

“We have been advised that he won’t be playing at Hoylake,” an R&A spokesman told SI. “We wish Tiger all the best with his recovery.”

The news means Woods’ competitive season is all but over.

The 15-time major champion has said he will only try to compete in major championships and a few select events going forward in the wake of the February 2021 car crash that nearly required the amputation of his right leg.

He came back for the 2022 Masters, made the cut and finished 47th there, but he withdrew after three rounds of the 2022 PGA Championship, skipped the U.S. Open and missed the cut at last year’s Open at St. Andrews.

The 2023 season hasn’t been kinder, as he withdrew after making the cut at the Masters as poor weather pushed the conclusion of the third round to Sunday. He hasn’t played since, missing the PGA Championship and this week’s U.S. Open.

In April, after the Masters, Woods underwent a subtalar fusion on his right ankle and foot to address arthritis there.

One of Woods’ three Open Championship victories came at Royal Liverpool in 2006.
