The New Orleans Saints plan to release veteran safety Marcus Maye, ESPN reported Friday.
Maye, who turns 31 on March 9, is entering the final season of a three-year, $28.5 million contract he signed in March 2022.
He was set to count $9.6 million against the salary cap and was due $7 million in base salary in 2024.
However, releasing Maye will only save the Saints $1.1 million against the cap due to a 2023 contract restructuring, per ESPN.
Maye was suspended for the first three games last season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy and missed the last six games with a shoulder injury. He only played 17 games in two seasons with New Orleans.
A second-round draft pick by the New York Jets in 2017, Maye has recorded eight interceptions and 409 tackles in 77 games (all starts) with the Jets (2017-21) and Saints.
