Report: Ryan Tannehill has ‘minimum’ of hyperextension, ACL tear possible

Ryan Tannehill

The Miami Dolphins are hoping for the best and bracing for the worst after Ryan Tannehill fell to the ground in a heap after hurting his left knee Thursday.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports Tannehill suffered, at minimum, a hyperextension to the left knee he injured last year.

“A source close to Tannehill said there is the possibility of poster cruciate ligament damage,” Salguero wrote.

If that’s the injury, then Tannehill could miss between two and eight weeks, per Salguero. However, that might not be the extend of the damage, either.

“There is also the possibility of the worst case scenario that everyone within the Dolphins organization is hoping to avoid: That would be a torn ACL to the left knee. That injury would almost certainly be a season ending injury.”

A team that won 10 games and made the playoffs for the first time since 2008 last year, Miami is ascending. However, that ascension is directly tied to the ascension of Tannehill.

If Tannehill is lost for the season, then the Dolphins will be in scramble mode to find another quarterback — a more dire situation than the one the Baltimore Ravens are in right now. Matt Moore is a serviceable backup, but he’s not starting material over the long haul.
