According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Reggie Bush has reached an agreement to sign with the San Francisco 49ers.
Bush, who played college football for the USC Trojans, will return to his home state.
The deal follows the running back’s second-worst statistical outputs of his career. Bush managed just 297 yards on the ground and 253 through the air during the 2014 season.
Between an ankle injury and the progression of both Joique Bell and Theo Riddick, Bush struggled to log consistent touches, which made the No. 2 pick of the 2006 draft an expendable asset.
Per Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com, the franchise saved $1.7 million by releasing Bush in February.
While it appears his best football years are gone, Bush theoretically still brings versatility to the 49ers. The shifty runner can line up in the backfield or as a receiver in the slot.
The biggest concern that follows the 30-year-old is indeed injury. Bush has sustained ankle, calf, fibula and hamstring setbacks that have cost him nearly two full campaigns during his nine-season career.
Signing Bush to a small-dollar deal involves little risk so long as he isn’t forced into the No. 1 role, because his ceiling isn’t very high. Contract numbers have yet to be released.
