The rumors that the Baltimore Ravens are looking to trade head coach John Harbaugh have lost some significant steam, and the two sides are reportedly close to an extension.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Monday that “Talks between the Ravens and coach John Harbaugh are progressing toward a long-term extension. Both sides are encouraged by where things stand, though nothing is done yet. As Harbaugh said Sunday, he’s expected to remain in Baltimore going forward.”
The notion that Baltimore was looking to trade Harbaugh was always rooted in fantasy, as I explained here.
The coach’s decision to roll with Lamar Jackson this season, keeping Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Flacco on the bench, secured his long-term position with the organization. His willingness to adapt might have saved his job, too, as Baltimore was a sinking ship prior to that move — especially after what owner Steve Bisciotti said after last season.
The Ravens did lose their wild-card playoff game, and some of that had to do with Jackson struggling so badly in the first three quarters. However, Harbaugh stuck with him once again, and he nearly brought the team back — Flacco was even impressed afterward.
Since taking over in 2008, Harbaugh has a record of 104-72. He has led the Ravens to eight winning seasons, two 8-8 seasons, and only one losing season. Of course, he also won a Super Bowl.
