Report: Matthew Stafford suffered separated finger, torn ligaments in finger

Matthew Stafford

Quarterbacks are becoming endangered in the NFL. On the heels of reports that Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffered a torn ACL Sunday afternoon, comes this damning news for the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions.

This likely won’t keep Matthew Stafford out for the remainder of the year. Heck, it’s more than likely he’ll suit up next week against the New York Giants. That’s not necessarily the issue here.

Considering this is on Stafford’s throwing hand, he’s sure to struggle with accuracy and consistency until the situation settles itself.

We saw Derek Carr struggle in both of these aspects during Thursday’s horrible performance against the Kansas City Chiefs. Carr is playing through pretty much the same injury that Stafford himself suffered on Sunday.

“Was just trying to figure out what was the best way to manage it,” Stafford said after the game, via ESPN.com. “You know, the training room guys, the equipment staff, everybody did a great job. Got me all ready to go, and then I just, I haven’t thrown with one in a long time. Trying to get the feel back was a little difficult.”

At 9-4 on the season, Detroit remains in first place in the NFC North. It is also battling for a first-round playoff bye following Sunday’s narrow win over the Chicago Bears.

Without much margin for error, this is most definitely something to keep an eye on.
