There are new authorities in town in San Francisco and the 49ers’ organization will look completely different because of it. Fresh off news that the 49ers have hired the inexperienced John Lynch to be their new general manager, a lot of speculation has surrounded how the front office dynamic might look.
With Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan set to take over as the 49ers’ head coach next week, the real question here is who will have control over the team’s roster.
The answer to this question seems to be a bit convoluted. According to ESPN’s Jim Trotter, Lynch will have control over the team’s 90-man roster as well as free agency, trades and the draft. Meanwhile, Shanahan himself will have control over the final 53-man roster.
The interesting dynamic here is that Lynch has absolutely no front office experience. It’s definitely led to some questions about his ability to lead a front office.
Since retiring from the NFL in 2007, the Hall of Fame candidate has been up in the broadcast booth for Fox. This will also be Shanahan’s first head coaching gig.
Though, there’s definitely something else in the works here. Various reports have suggested that the 49ers will be brining in former Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik to work under Lynch in the front office (more on that here).
Whether it is Dominik or another experienced personnel guy that follows Lynch to San Francisco, that person will also likely have input over all this.
