Jim Caldwell’s job as head coach of the Detroit Lions reportedly isn’t secure following the franchise’s decision to hire Bob Quinn as the general manager.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports the Lions could potentially opt for a new head coach, despite Caldwell leading the Detroit Lions to a 6-2 record in the second half of the season and despite his players speaking out in support of their leader.
The Lions dumped many of their high-level coaches and front-office people during the tumultuous 2015 campaign, but Caldwell remained and rallied his team to finish strong. In particular, the promotion of Jim Bob Cooter to offensive coordinator sparked the team’s offense to perform at a high level.
Things could look a whole lot different for Detroit next year on that front, however. Rumors are swirling about wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who may be contemplating retirement (h/t Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press). If he does retire, it would sure take a load off Quinn’s plate as general manager, as the receiver is set to count $24 million against the cap.
Perhaps Quinn could be looking to get younger all around — both on the field and on the sideline.
If he does want to make a move in that direction, however, he must act swiftly. Adam Gase has already signed with the Miami Dolphins, and Hue Jackson is considered the “clear front-runner” to land the job with the San Francisco 49ers.
