The Dallas Cowboys were dealt a severe blow to their depth at quarterback after backup Kellen Moore broke his ankle in practice earlier this week.

With only rookie Dak Prescott behind Tony Romo on the depth chart, the team is now in desperation mode heading into the preseason slate. Simply put, Dallas needs to find itself a quality backup behind its injury-plagued starter.
One name that was bandied about even before Moore’s injury was former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Nick Foles, who the team released back in July.
While Dallas didn’t display much interest in Foles following his release, things surely have changed for the team.
Now according to this report from ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Cowboys are kicking the tires on potentially signing Foles. Werder also concludes that the team is looking into potential trades for a veteran.
Foles might be the best option in a watered-down free agent market, but he’s not necessarily someone that brings a ton of value to the table. Los Angeles was forced to release him after no team showed interest in trading for the struggling veteran.
That lack of interest makes sense considering Foles led the league’s worst passing attack last season with the Rams. Overall, the former Pro Bowler put up just seven touchdowns and 10 picks in 11 starts.
The idea here would be to sign Foles and have him immediately slot in behind Romo on the depth chart. Should something happen to the Cowboys starter, Foles could then step in and hold down the fort over the short term.
In terms of potential trades, Josh McCown of the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup Mike Glennon might make sense.
Either way, Dallas simply can’t head into the 2016 season without adding a veteran to the roster. That much is known.
