According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs could end up cutting wide receiver Dwayne Bowe if they are unable to work out a trade for him.
As part of his five-year $56 million contract he signed back in 2013, Bowe is slated to earn $10.75 million this year. Fortunately for the Chiefs, little of that money is actually guaranteed. So if need be, they could work around him with minimal cap hit.
Back in 2010 and 2011, Bowe had some really good seasons with the Chiefs. He racked up over 2,300 yards and 20 touchdowns during that span. However, this past season was a struggle for the big-bodied wide receiver. He only managed 754 yards and did not score a single touchdown.
It will likely take some time for teams to reach out to Bowe coming off of his recent season’s stats. As for a replacement to an ailing Chiefs’ wide receiver corp, it is rumored that they could have plans to bid on the services of Green Bay Packers’ slot receiver Randall Cobb. If Cobb does not have an agreement in place with his team by 4:00 ET this Saturday, then other teams will be able to make offers.
Either way, it appears that the 30-year-old Bowe—a first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2007—is in the phase-out stage after eight seasons with the team.
