The Denver Broncos have made it clear that they plan to upgrade at the quarterback position this offseason. That was taken to a whole new level recently with reports that the team plans on trading struggling young signal caller Trevor Siemian.
Now comes this report from Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports indicating that the Broncos themselves plan to go “all in” for Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins once free agency starts later this month.
“Kirk Cousins has become an ‘all-in’ target for the franchise when free agency kicks off March 14, two sources familiar with the Broncos’ free agency plans told Yahoo Sports,” Robinson reported.
Denver will definitely face competition for Cousins’ services. The New York Jets are said to be willing to offer the soon-to-be former Redskins quarterback a fully guaranteed deal with up to $60 million in cash Year 1. That’s going to be extremely difficult for the Broncos to match given that they’re currently less than $27 million under the cap.
With Siemian on the trade block and fellow struggling signal caller Brock Osweiler set to become a free agent, Paxton Lynch is the only Broncos quarterback that will likely return to the team next season. He’s proven to be nothing less than a downright first-round bust for GM John Elway and Co.
For his part, Cousins has indicated that money won’t be the determining factor in choosing a new team. Even then, the Broncos will be hard-pressed to make a competitive offer short of releasing multiple starters.
