Washington Redskins rookie defensive back Bashaud Breeland, a fourth-round pick out of Clemson, was cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University on Monday (via The Washington Times).
Breeland, 22, was issued a summons for simple possession of marijuana at 10:40 p.m. by Edwin Alvarez, a VCU Police Department officer. No additional information was made available by a campus police department spokeswoman, citing pending adjudication. A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 26.
The Redskins acknowledged Breeland’s citation but wouldn’t provide further comment.
Breeland is subject to discipline from the NFL, but it remains to be seen exactly what Roger Goodell might do in this situation. The rookie would be a first-time offender and likely won’t face jail time for the citation.
In need of help in the secondary, Washington cannot afford to lose Breeland for substantial time during the regular season. He recorded six tackles and an interception in the Redskins preseason debut against New England last week.
