Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito will undergo elbow surgery Tuesday to determine the severity of an injury that occurred earlier in spring training, multiple outlets reported.

Giolito, 29, was signed by the Red Sox this past offseason to a two-year, $38.5 million deal, with the first year of that contract in danger of being a wash. While Tommy John surgery was a possibility, that will not be determined until Tuesday’s procedure in Birmingham, Ala.

The initial injury was diagnosed as a partial tear in Giolito’s ulnar collateral ligament as well as a forearm flexor tendon strain.

An All-Star in 2019 for the Chicago White Sox, when he also finished sixth in American League Cy Young Award voting, Giolito has struggled in recent seasons, delivering a 4.90 ERA in 2022 and a 4.88 mark last season when he went 8-15 while pitching for the White Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians.

In eight major league seasons, Giolito is 61-62 in 180 appearances (178 starts) and has a 4.43 ERA with 1,077 strikeouts in 1,013 2/3 innings.

Giolito had Tommy John surgery in 2012, while still getting drafted in the first round by the Washington Nationals, even though he needed the procedure.
