Defender Tom Edwards is returning to the New York Red Bulls on loan from English Championship side Stoke City.
“We are thrilled to bring Tom back to New York,” Red Bulls head of sport Kevin Thelwell said in a release Thursday. “Bringing him back was a priority of ours at the beginning of the offseason because of the quality he has both on and off the field.”
Edwards, 23, notched two assists across 27 games (25 starts) last season, his first in the MLS.
“I am pleased to have Tom back with the squad,” Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber said. “Not only does he have top quality on the field but he is great to have in our locker room. Tom’s warrior mentality will be helpful for us this year.”
Also on Thursday, the Red Bulls signed midfielder Serge Ngoma to a homegrown deal.
Ngoma, 16, has three goals and an assist in 22 matches with New York Red Bulls II since Sept. 23, 2020.
“Serge is a talent at the midfield position,” Struber said. “We see big potential out of him. We want to see him continue to grow with Red Bulls II and hope his development goes in a positive way.”
