Jared Goff’s first introduction to the Los Angeles Rams’ offense went swimmingly, based on comments made by head coach Jeff Fisher during the team’s rookie mini-camp over the weekend.
“He’s doing a great job picking up our offense,” Fisher said, per the team’s website. “We’ve given him a lot more information than we did at the private workout and then that we did here at our meeting, and he’s handled it without any problem. And that’s the impressive thing.”
This must be exciting for Rams fans to read about, especially since it’s been more than a minute since the Rams featured a quarterback to be proud about.
Goff has plenty of potential. In his final two years at Cal, he passed for 8,687 yards with 78 touchdowns and just 20 interceptions.
That Goff is picking up the playbook quickly shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s followed him over the years, though. An extremely intelligent player and person, this was put on display during his pre-draft “QB Camp” with Jon Gruden session.
Another admirable quality that he brings to the organization is his tireless work ethic. This was another thing Fisher noticed right off the bat during the weekend.
“I passed him last night walking to the room and he was leaving the meeting room at 10 o’clock,” Fisher said. “He’s that kind of guy. He’ll spend the time. It’s important to him.”
It’s going to continue to be important for Goff to enter the 2016 NFL season with the offense tattooed onto his brain.
The Rams don’t exactly feature a scary receiving corps, so it’s going to be up to the rookie quarterback to turn his less-than-scary playmakers into stars. The greats all have this capability, with Tom Brady being the most recent example of a quarterback who can turn sludge into gold.
Goff and the rest of the rookies will continue to get their feet wet for the next month or so before joining their veteran peers for the team’s first OTAs at the end of May.
