PSG Talon and Team Whales advanced to Round 2 in Thursday’s play-in action at the 2023 League of Legends World Championship.

PSG Talon swept LOUD in a Group A winners’ match and Team Whales rallied for a 2-1 defeat of CTBC Flying Oyster in Group B.

Hong Kong-based PSG won in 33 minutes on blue and 32 minutes on red. Flying Oyster started with a 30-minute win on blue, but Vietnam’s Whales answered with a 31-minute victory on blue and a 37-minute triumph on red.

The $2.25 million tournament continues on Friday with a pair of elimination matches: Rainbow7 vs. GAM Esports in Group A and Team BDS vs. DetonatioN FocusMe in Group B.

The winners of the elimination matches will advance to Saturday’s decider matches against Group A’s LOUD and Group B’s Flying Oyster. The winners of those decider matches advance to Round 2 of the play-in stage, where PSG Talon and Team Whales await.

All matches in the play-in rounds are best-of-three.

After the two-play-in rounds, the world championships advance to the Swiss stage and then the knockout stage. All rounds are being contested in venues in South Korea. The knockout round will culminate with the grand final, to be played Nov. 19 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.
