NFL rumors: Is Aaron Rodgers signing with Pittsburgh Steelers following visit? Insider provides latest update

The Pittsburgh Steelers might be one step closer to securing their starting quarterback for 2025 as Aaron Rodgers visited their facility on Friday.

According to multiple reports, including ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Rodgers met with Steelers coaches at the team’s practice facility. The visit marks a significant development in Pittsburgh’s offseason quarterback search.

Rodgers finds himself a free agent for the first time in his career after the New York Jets released him following two drama-filled seasons. The four-time MVP led Gang Green to a dismal 5-12 record during a nightmarish campaign where head coach Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas were fired mid-season. Owner Woody Johnson reportedly even wanted Rodgers benched at some point during the year.

Despite the Jets’ struggles, Rodgers did put up respectable peripheral numbers — nearly 4,000 yards passing and 28 touchdowns — but he’s clearly not the same player he once was. At 41 years of age and coming back from a serious Achilles injury, his mobility has diminished significantly. He took 40 sacks in 2024 and posted a career-low 6.7 yards gained per pass attempt since becoming a starter.

Despite this regression, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin remains a huge fan of Rodgers and wants to make him the team’s starting quarterback. Getting Rodgers to visit is a good first step, but questions remain about whether a deal will materialize.

Even though Rodgers met with team personnel, a deal is not currently close, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

“No deal is done or imminent. But Rodgers spent time with coaches—another sign he’s seriously considering playing his 21st season in Pittsburgh,” Pelissero posted on X.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Rodgers already has standing offers from both the Steelers and the New York Giants. The Minnesota Vikings reportedly backed off from their pursuit of Rodgers and are sticking with 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.

It’s not yet known when Rodgers will make his decision, leaving Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation in limbo.

The Steelers have already brought back Mason Rudolph while Russell Wilson remains a free agent and Justin Fields departed for the Jets — ironically replacing the quarterback Pittsburgh is now pursuing.
