Phoenix Suns ‘monitoring’ possible buyout of 3-time All-Star

The Phoenix Suns are reportedly targeting a one-time NBA MVP that could possibly hit the free-agent market in the coming weeks.

The NBA trade deadline was the last chance for many teams to make a meaningful move that could have a major effect on their trajectory for the rest of the season. The Phoenix Suns made the biggest trade of the season earlier this month when they acquired future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Durant from the Brooklyn Nets.

The move immediately made the Suns a favorite to win an NBA Championship in 2023. This is no surprise since Durant will be joining an already stacked starting five that includes superstar Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and 12-time All-Star Chris Paul.

However, the team may not be done adding pieces for their playoff run, and they are reportedly keeping their eyes on a former NBA MVP that could soon be bought out of his contract.

Phoenix Suns hoping to sign Derrick Rose after possible contract buyout

One player that has been speculated as a possible buyout candidate over the last month is former Chicago Bulls great and current New York Knicks player Derrick Rose. After being a key part of their return to relevancy in 2020-2021, he has been a healthy scratch over the last couple of months. This follows a disappointing and injury-filled showing last season.

  • Derrick Rose stats (’22-’23): 12.9 MPG, 5.8 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 1.8 APG, 32% 3PT

On Thursday, Bleacher Report NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that the Phoenix Suns are “monitoring” the situation between Rose and the Knicks in the hopes of possibly signing him if he is bought out of his deal. However, Haynes does note that a buyout is unlikely, but sources claim they don’t believe “the door is completely shut on the possibility.”

Derrick Rose has a $15.5 million club option for next season remaining on his contract.

The three-time All-Star is far removed from his prime, but he would still be a worthwhile addition to a Phoenix Suns bench that was further weakened following the trade for Durant.
