NFL rumors: Insider pours ice water on chatter Philadelphia Eagles could pursue blockbuster Myles Garrett trade

While the Philadelphia Eagles targeting a trade for Myles Garrett isn’t impossible, a top NFL insider recently explained why it is pretty close.

The Eagles and their fan base are still bathing in the afterglow of their Super Bowl victory in February. Not only did it bring the franchise its third NFL championship, but they got revenge on the Kansas City Chiefs after losing to them in the big game a few seasons ago.

However, staying on top year in and year out in the NFL is one of the most difficult things to do in professional sports. Fortunately for Philadelphia, they will return many of the key players from their title team next season. And general manager Howie Roseman has long shown a willingness to make big moves to keep his team in the hunt for a Super Bowl title.

That is why it should come as no surprise that the Eagles have seen their name in rumors of a potential trade for superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett. NFL Network league insider Ian Rapoport doesn’t rule out a trade. However, on Wednesday he explained why it would be an extremely difficult deal to actually pull off.

  • Myles Garrett stats (2024): 47 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 28 QB hits

Philadelphia Eagles would have to slash a massive amount of payroll to make Myles Garrett trade

“As far as the Philadelphia Eagles go, they have paid a lot of money to their own guys. All their best players are locked in on huge deals,” Rapoport began by saying. “Saquon Barkley, to Jalen Hurts, to AJ Brown, to Devonta Smith. Even though they cleared out some cap space yesterday, here’s what I want to point out, if the Eagles were to take on a huge contract for Myles Garrett, he will be the highest paid non-quarterback in the NFL. No doubt about it.

“In order to take on that contract, they would have to get rid of other big contracts. Even the Eagles can’t just fit everybody they want. I would be very surprised if this happens. It is a great rumor.”

  • Myles Garrett contract: five years, $125 million

So essentially, if the Eagles want to get Myles Garrett, they would need to give up big pieces of a roster that just helped win a Super Bowl. Making a possible trade more of a lateral move than one that makes them far better in 2025. Rapoport also added that the Cleveland Browns are still pretty set in their stance that they do not intend to trade their top player this offseason.
