Olympics roundup: American Jade Carey wins gold on floor exercise

American gymnast Jade Carey won the gold medal on the floor exercise on Monday with a score of 14.366.

The medal was the fifth won by the U.S. women’s gymnastics team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It was the final event sat out by Simone Biles, who will return for the balance beam competition.

Vanessa Ferrari of Italy took silver and there was a tie for bronze.

The U.S. leads the medal count with 64, followed by China (62) and the Russian Olympic Committee (50).

China, however, leads the gold medal count with 29. The U.S. is second (22) and host nation Japan is third (17).

–Japan rallied from three runs down to defeat Team USA 7-6 in the baseball competition.

Japan tied it in the ninth inning and former major league pitcher Edwin Jackson gave up the game-winning single in the 10th.

Japan advances to the semifinals while Team USA drops to the lower bracket of the double-elimination second round. The U.S. awaits the winner of an elimination game between the Dominican Republic and Israel.

South Korea crushed Israel 11-1 to advance to the semis against Japan.

–American Valarie Allman secured the first gold for the U.S. in track and field in discus.

Her first throw went 226 feet, 3 inches, good enough for gold. Germany and Cuba took silver and bronze.

–American Adeline Gray took silver in women’s 76 kg wrestling, losing in the final to Aline Rotter-Focken of Germany.

Gray lost in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

–The U.S. men’s water polo team lost to Greece but will advance to the knockout stage with a group record of 2-0-3. The loss was the third straight for the Americans.
