Embattled Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni joined general manager Howie Roseman in giving their season-ending press conference on Wednesday.
It was delayed well over a week after Philadelphia was blown out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs, primarily because owner Jeffrey Lurie had not made a decision on Sirianni’s future after they lost six of seven to conclude the season.
Much like you’d expect from Philadelphia media, the presser was pretty contentious. That included one reporter legitimately asking Sirianni what his actual role will be next season.
“If the offensive coordinator is going to be in charge of the offense and the defensive coordinator is going to be in charge of the defense, what will your role be?”
Reporter to Nick Sirianni
It’s been an open question in Philadelphia. Last season saw Brian Johnson call plays on offense with Sean Desai and Matt Patricia sharing play-calling duties on defense. All three were let go after the 2023 season.
In responding to this question, Sirianni really didn’t answer.
“Very similar” to what is happening right now. Is this really what Roseman and Lurie wanted to hear? In reality, Sirianni is saying he’s going to act as CEO of the football team.
What Philadelphia is doing in an attempt to build a coaching staff for Sirianni adds another layer to this. Reports indicate that Vic Fangio will be hired as Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator. He has two decades of experience in that role within the confines of the NFL.
Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury is also being considered for the offensive coordinator position with the Eagles.
The question poised to Sirianni was not out of line. His response also left a lot to be desired. That’s for sure.
