A notable NFL insider believes that if the New York Giants strike out on signing Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson in free agency, they are a lock to go after a specific quarterback in the NFL Draft.
The New York Giants are in a difficult position heading into the weekend. Over the first week of NFL free agency, the team has received positive reviews for the moves they have made to bolster their defense. However, they have yet to answer their biggest question for 2025. Who will be their starting QB next season?
They have the third overall pick in April and could use it on a young signal caller. However, the team reportedly wants a veteran QB next season, and would prefer one that can help turn them into a playoff contender. That is why they made a strong push to trade for Los Angeles Rams great Matthew Stafford. However, those attempts failed last week.
Now, the G-Men have been pursuing future Hall of Famers Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. But, it is far from a lock that they sign either with better teams like the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers, also in pursuit. If they can’t sign either, ESPN NFL insider Field Yates seems to think it is a lock that this player then becomes their top target.

New York Giants a lock to draft Shedeur Sanders if they don’t sign Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson

“The New York Giants at No. 3, for a head coach and a GM that are on the hot seat going into this year, are not going to bypass Shedeur Sanders at third overall if he is there,” Yates said this week. “And they do not already have a veteran option at the level of Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers. If the Giants sign a Jameis Winston or a Carson Wentz or a player in that category, they will take Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 overall.
“Because Shedeur clearly represents a much better option than those guys. Not just in the future, but as soon as this year. You can make a case that Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers give you a much better case to win this year than Shedeur Sanders. So if the Giants land one of those two players, they might be out of the quarterback market.”
- Shedeur Sanders stats (2024): 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 168.2 passer rating
Miami star Cam Ward is viewed as the best QB in this year’s class. But Yates expects him to go No. 1 to the Tennessee Titans. And the Cleveland Browns have been linked to Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter at No. 2. That would allow Sanders to fall into the Giants’ lap at three. However, he also has notable flaws in his game.
That is why Yates suggests if they land either Rodgers or Wilson they might punt on taking a QB until later in the draft or until next year.
