NFL players blown away at NBA free agent contracts

Most folks would consider NFL players to be some of the highest-paid athletes in the sports world.

However, since the 2016 NBA free agency period began which included the franchises getting a major raise in salary cap, some of the new deals being inked in the NBA are considered downright ridiculous to some NFL players.

With deals like the one Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside landed (a four-year, $98 million contract) and Timofey Mozgov’s new four-year $64 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, among others, people are taking notice. Worth noting is that Mozgov scored only seven points with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2016 NBA Finals.

With that said, here are some social media reactions from the NFL players regarding the recent NBA free agency activity (h/t Gavin Evans of complex.com).

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, Jeremy Maclin will earn $10 million in 2016.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy will earn $12.5 million in 2016.

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jeremy Butler is lined up with a $525,000 salary next season, and he’s pretty sure he’d be making bank playing in the Association.

Atlanta Falcons fullback, Patrick DiMarco will earn $760,000 in 2016.

The volume of tweets goes far beyond these few, but we get the idea. Furthermore, another note to ponder regarding NBA contracts is that they are all fully guaranteed. On the other hand, those playing in the NFL are only guaranteed a certain portion of the player’s pay, if they have any guarantees at all.

On top of that, per Evans, the average NBA salary is approximately $5 million compared to $1.9 million for an NFL player.

For many reasons, we can see why NBA free agency is causing NFL players to take notice and get vocal with their opinions.
