According to NFL Media’s Mike Silver, former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is expected to receive a four-game suspension from the league.Â
The suspension stems from a car accident in 2012 in which his former Cowboys teammate Jerry Brown was killed. As the driver of the car that killed Brown, Brent was found to be over the legal alcohol limit and served nearly six months in jail after a conviction of intoxication manslaughter.
According to Silver, the Cowboys plan on re-signing Brent once he is able to play.Â
According to a team source, the Cowboys — who plan to re-sign Brent as soon as he is able to resume his career — are bracing for a four-game suspension.
While some will question the lack of severity as it relates to Brent’s punishment, it’s important to note that he did his time in jail and wasn’t acting maliciously at the time that one of his closest friends died. Brown’s family have forgiven Brent and support his decision to return to the NFL.
Brent has appeared in 39 career games (zero starts), recording 44 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He was originally a seventh-round supplemental pick of the Cowboys back in 2010.
