A former New York Yankees player and analyst claims slugger Giancarlo Stanton would be open to a trade in the near future since he is not appreciated for how he’s handled playing in New York City.
This will be a very interesting offseason for the Yankees. The 2023 season delivered results well below the franchise’s high standards as they finished with an 82-80 record and near the bottom of the American League East in the MLB Standings.

Obviously, some adjustments to the roster will be made this winter. Yet, while various signs point to the organization checking in with top-shelf free agents like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, they are unlikely to be big spenders like they have been in years past.
Part of the reason they may be more conservative this offseason is they have some big contracts already on their payroll and the Yankees are not looking to add any more luxury taxes to their budget in 2024. One player who has been a financial burden is five-time All-Star Giancarlo Stanton.
- Giancarlo Stanton (2023): .191 AVG, .275 OBP, .420 SLG, 24 HR, 60 RBI, 43 R
While he earned All-Star honors in 2022, it is safe to say he has been a major disappointment after the team traded for him in 2018. He has been a source of frustration for the fan base during that time, but with him having at least four more seasons at nearly $30 million a season owed to him, and a long injury history, he is one of the most untradable players in MLB.
Does Giancarlo Stanton want the New York Yankees to trade him?
However, former 2019 Yankees player and YES Network analyst Cameron Maybin believes if the organization was able to find a team willing to trade for the designated hitter, the 34-year-old would welcome an escape from New York.
Late last week, New York sports radio personality Keith McPherson claimed on X that “[Gerrit] Cole is not opting out. [Aaron] Judge is never requesting a trade. Stanton wants to finish his career here. Same w/ [Anthony] Rizzo and [DJ] LeMahieu” and that the team should work toward bolstering the roster for the window this group has.
Maybin responded to the comments by saying he agreed with everything mentioned, except the part about Stanton. “I’m not putting words in his mouth but not so sure he wants to finish his career in the pinstripes. I’m sure he’d like to finish somewhere that actually appreciates how he’s handled every sec of being in NYC,” he said.
There haven’t been any rumors of the New York Yankees being close to a trade or Stanton requesting one, but it would seem like a scenario that would benefit both sides if it were possible this winter.
