The injury bug is still flying around the MLB, and has recently landed on New York’s highest-paid pitcher, CC Sabathia‘s knee.
According to Buster Olney, Sabathia has some “breakdown of cartilage in his right knee, which caused the pain, swelling and fluid buildup that sent him to the disabled list on May 11.”Over his 14-year career, the 33 year-old has a 208-119 record with a 3.63 ERA. (I realize giving his career stats may make it seem like I’m saying my goodbyes, but this isn’t goodbye. General manager Brian Cashman is saying he could be back around July 1st.)
The injuries don’t stop there. Â According to CBS Sports, Carlos Beltran is on the 15-Day DL with an elbow injury in which he anticipates a mid-June return, Michael Pineda has a shoulder injury and joins Beltran on the DL and anticipates a late May return. Ivan Nova is out for the rest of the season; he has joined the list of Tommy John surgeries that seems to be growing by the day.
Alex Rodriguez isn’t injured, but his reputation is on the DL this season. Needless to say, you won’t be seeing him in pinstripes this season.
The Yankees are currently 23-20, 1st in the AL Eastern Division, but Baltimore is just behind them, so they have shown promise despite injuries plucking some names from their roster. Plucking Sabathia could be scary, especially with the Orioles as the Yankees’ biggest competition.
Sabathia will begin his spot on the DL with a 5.28 ERA and a 3-4 record in 46 innings this season.
