The New York Red Bulls acquired defender Tom Edwards on loan from England’s Stoke City, the club announced Wednesday.
The move is pending receipt of his international paperwork and Edwards will occupy an international slot on the roster through the end of 2021.
“Thank you very much. Can’t wait to get to work,” he posted on Twitter, replying to the Red Bulls’ announcement.
Edwards, 22, started in the Stoke City youth system at age 7, making his senior team debut against Manchester City on Oct. 14, 2017. He made six starts during the 2017-18 Premier League season before the club was relegated to the English Championship.
“I’m pleased that we have added Tom to our team,” Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber said in a release. “Tom has a variety of experiences at different levels of English football, including the Premier League. He is a dynamic player at both ends of the field, he is a strong defender and has good qualities to join in the attack as well.”
Edwards, who was recently loaned to the English League One squad Fleetwood Town, has posted one goal and one assist across all competitions with Stoke City.
