A new report sheds more light on how badly the New York Giants want future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers to make them his next team this offseason.
The Giants quarterback situation has been a mess since team legend Eli Manning called it a career after the 2018 season. The organization hoped when they made Daniel Jones the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft he could be the heir apparent and be their next franchise QB.
Unfortunately, despite some early signs and a breakout season in 2022, Jones can now add his name to the long list of first-round draft busts. Now, the Giants must start from scratch this offseason with the most important position on the field. The assumption has long been they would take a top QB prospect in April’s draft. They may, but they still want a veteran in their QB room.
Furthermore, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are very much trying to keep their jobs after this season. So they would like a veteran QB who isn’t just a mentor to a rookie but can help them compete for a playoff spot. That is why they are very high on signing Green Bay Packers and New York Jets veteran Aaron Rodgers.
New York Giants willing to wait as long as Aaron Rodgers wants to make a decision?
It seems they are so locked in on signing the four-time NFL MVP that they are willing to risk it all for him in the coming days by waiting as long as the 41-year-old needs to decide on where he wants to play in 2025.
“The Giants are waiting this all out to see if Aaron Rodgers is going to make a decision on whether or not he wants to play for the Giants. They are seemingly on his list of teams he would consider early on… Nobody knows how long this is going to take. He’s probably sort of enjoying the fact that we are talking about him day in and day out. Wondering when he is going to make his decision. The Giants are not rushing him. They are giving him his space.”
NFL insider Mike Garafolo
There are major risks for the New York Giants by letting him take as long as he wants. Garafolo mentioned that the team met with veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, and Jameis Winston this week. All of them are good to solid plan B’s to Rodgers. However, other teams are interested in them as well. And if the G-Men wait too long they could lose them to rival franchises.
Rumors have suggested Rodgers would prefer to play for the Minnesota Vikings next season. But a new report yesterday suggested they are ready to go forward with 2024 first-round pick JJ McCarthy as their starter next season.
