This past season’s New York Giants team was a mess. They couldn’t go anything right, whether it was on offense, defense, or special teams.

When you fail in all three phases as the Giants did, you end up with a 3-14 record. So, what can the Giants do to improve this offseason? One potential path has already been forged.

The New York Giants are projected to have over $35 million in salary cap space available this offseason. That cash will be spread out in a number of ways, from free agency signings to contract extensions and their incoming rookie class.

Yet, after struggling to find consistency, the Giants might feel the urge to part ways with a few players from their roster first.

Recently, The Athletic’s Dan Duggan predicted who the Giants’ most obvious cap casualty could be this offseason. In doing so, Duggan named former Pro Bowl kicker Graham Gano as the most likely to go.

“The Giants don’t have any albatross contracts to shed this offseason and they’re in a healthy enough cap situation that they don’t need to make any cap cuts. Still, a $5.7 million cap hit is excessive for the 37-year-old Gano, who has missed 16 games due to injury the past two seasons. The Giants can create $3.2 million in cap savings while eating $2.5 million in dead money by dumping Gano. That’s not an overwhelming financial impetus, but a team in the Giants’ position can allocate that money better.”

It’s true. There’s no need for a non-contender to be allocating $5.7 million to an aging kicker, especially since he connected on just 81.8% of his field goals in 2024.
