Grayson McCall plans to play at NC State as a grad transfer after four seasons as quarterback at Coastal Carolina.

McCall confirmed the move on Wednesday, one year after he entered the transfer portal but did a U-turn and spent the 2023 season as quarterback of the Chanticleers. He played in only seven games and had 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.

He left the field in an ambulance after a helmet-to-helmet hit in his final game for Coastal on Oct. 21 and was diagnosed with a concussion. McCall missed the final five games of the season.

McCall, a three-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, did eclipse 10,000 passing yards as a redshirt senior in 2023. He has 88 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and 18 rushing touchdowns.

He had more than 8,000 passing yards in his first three seasons running the spread scheme under Jamey Chadwell. Chadwell took the coaching job at Liberty last December, when McCall initially entered the transfer portal. When he returned to Coastal, McCall stepped into a new offense under head coach Tim Beck.

A native of Indian Trail, N.C., McCall had only five offers out of high school. Army, Gardner-Webb, Eastern Kentucky and Chattanooga also offered scholarships.

NC State is losing sixth-year quarterback Brennan Armstrong, a graduate transfer from Virginia who had 11 touchdowns and six interceptions for the Wolfpack in 2023.

McCall established the FBS record in passing efficiency rating at 207.6 in 2021. Alabama’s Mac Jones (203.1) set the previous record in 2020, beating the mark established by LSU’s Joe Burrow (202.0) in 2019.
