Jeremy Mayfield has accepted a management and consultation role at a coastal North Carolina short track.
Mayfield, who has five wins in 433 NASCAR Cup Series starts from 1993 to 2009, has joined the staff of Carteret County Speedway, where he will work in a role overseeing ‘competition, marketing, and community partnerships.’
“I grew up racing at short tracks so Carteret feels like home to me,” Mayfield said in a press release. “I’m looking forward to working alongside Bob Lowery and the great team he already has in place to help elevate an already exciting racing program.”
While no longer active in NASCAR, Mayfield still races numerous short track categories including the Grand National Super Series, which uses classic Cup Series style chassis.
“We, at Carteret Speedway, are super excited to have Jeremy Mayfield join our team,” said track owner Bob Lowery “He brings so much to the table.”
Mayfield, 54, has been suspended by NASCAR since the 2009 season over a positive drug test that he remains resolute in his innocence over. Mayfield refused to participate in the NASCAR Road to Recovery program that would have ended his suspension as a testament to his innocence.
He also avoided jail time by taking a plea deal in 2011 over seven felony charges for one charge of possession of methamphetamine, five charges for possession of stolen goods and one charge of obtaining property under false pretense, all stemming from a November 1, 2011 search of his home.
He has spent much of the past decade within grassroots motorsports.
