NASCAR Rumors: Is Joe Gibbs Forced to Make a Tough Call on Grandson Ty Gibbs?

NASCAR: Cup Qualifying

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is under pressure as rumors swirl around Joe Gibbs and his grandson, Ty Gibbs. The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season hasn’t been kind to Ty Gibbs and some fans and insiders are starting to wonder if Joe Gibbs will have to make a tough decision on his young driver.

Is Ty Gibbs Underperforming at JGR?

With 77 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series with Joe Gibbs Racing, Ty Gibbs is still winless. His lack of success has many comparing him to JGR’s past underperformers and he’s now just 2 races away from surpassing JJ Yeley’s 78 winless start record for the team. Colby Evans even tweeted, “Ty Gibbs only 3 races away from becoming the longest-tenured JGR Cup driver without a win.”

Ty Gibb himself said during the last race, “I don’t know what to say. I feel like I’m a foot higher than every person on this track. I have no rear grip anywhere and after about 10 laps I might as well just throw this thing away.”

2025 has been tough. Ty Gibbs’ best finish so far is 16th at Daytona. But things went downhill fast after that. He crashed at Atlanta (32nd), struggled at COTA (34th) and finished 25th at Phoenix.

The 22-year-old driver is looking even more lost when compared to his teammate Christopher Bell, who has 3 wins in 4 races this season. Bell’s dominance and Chase Briscoe’s Daytona 500 pole make Ty’s struggles even more pronounced.

Now Joe Gibbs faces a crossroads. As both a team owner and a grandfather he has to decide if he stays the course with Ty or makes tough decisions to protect JGR’s legacy. New crew chief Tyler Allen was supposed to bring stability but the results aren’t there yet.

Some insiders think benching Ty could be a real possibility if he doesn’t turn it around soon. But as NASCAR insider Dan ‘Spider’ DiOrio said, “While Gibbs’ performance was a cause for concern, he had shown promise previously… He specifically cited his top-five finish at COTA and a top 10 at Las Vegas last year.”

With fans asking about Ty Gibbs’s future at JGR, all eyes are on Joe Gibbs. Can the NFL Hall of Famer get Ty through this? Or will he have to make the hardest decision of his NASCAR career?
